Before the formation of the Ontario university system in 1967, there were a few trade schools in the province. Many of those schools were established in the postwar years primarily to help veterans reintegrate into civilian life. In the late 1950s, tech wings were added to Ontario high schools to help young people. A decade later, Prime Minister William Davis, now considered the "father of Ontario's university system," responded to a growing need for technical education by creating applied arts and technology colleges to train people for jobs.
Brockville was originally suggested for the main campus by a St. Lawrence College proposal, but after much debate, during the often “stand-alone” meetings held at Brockville City Hall, it was decided that the local population was not the thing. large enough to support one facility. Cornwall and Kingston were chosen to serve six counties in the Eastern Ontario region: Frontenac, Leeds, Grenville, Dundas, Stormont, and Glengarry.
By its tenth year, St. Lawrence College was a strong and creative force, serving its communities and training graduates for their future.
Today, after 50 years of existence, the College continues to evolve to meet the needs of students seeking the skills that will lead to a better quality of life.
With modern and expansive facilities in three vibrant eastern Ontario cities and a strong record of excellence, St. Lawrence College still combines all the benefits of a world-class education with the advantages of small town life and personalized attention to the details.
