  • CAEL is a test designed to measure English language proficiency for students planning to study at Canadian post-secondary institutions.
  • CAEL is officially accepted by professional organizations, colleges, universities and employers as proof of English language proficiency. Please note that CAEL scores taken at a test center or online are used in the same way and that the test format, test content, scoring criteria, and grading scale are exactly the same.
  • CAEL Online can be safely carried from home. CAEL Online includes the same test format, content and reporting scale as the CAEL face-to-face test.
  • Students taking the exam will read articles, listen to a lecture, answer questions, and write a short essay, as they would be expected to do in a Canadian freshman college or university classroom.
    • Speaking. Reply to on-screen prompts verbally. 7-10 minutes
    • Integrated Reading. Read passages and reply to questions. 35-50 minutes
    • Integrated Listening. Listen to passages and reply to questions. 25-35 minutes
    • Academic Unit A. Answer comprehension questions and write a reply. 60-70 minutes.
    • Academic Unit B. Answer comprehension questions and write a reply. 40-45 minutes.

HOW TO PERFORM THE CAEL ONLINE EXAM?

  1. Make your registration on this page.
    Once you have registered you will be redirected to the CAEL site.

  2. Log into your CAEL account.
    After creating a new CAEL account or logging into an existing account, students can register to take the test.

  3. Register in CAEL.
    Choose an exam date.

  4. Choose your ID.
    Students can choose the type of personal identification they will provide on the exam from a list of acceptable identification options.

  5. Confirm information and payment option.
    Students can pay by credit card online or submit a paper test registration form through the mail with an alternative form of payment.

You can check the compatibility of your computer system using the system verification tool here; however, after registering for the test, you will be asked to complete another mandatory system verification within your CAEL account before taking the test.
